wa ah... wa si sing ka po lang la!
ah li ji ye thursday ke zo PR ok liao la

my employment letter also has a clause that says i cant join a competitor in the same industry..
but is just bullsh ...
Pls becareful!
In tech firm, most of them has such a non-competitive clause to ensure that employees leaving the company will not join the rivalry companies. This is to avoid amassing customers moving with the employee to another company, sensitive info giving advantage to the competition etc.

If you maintain good relationship with people in the company, and you leave quietly, not telling people where you are going... that, you might be ok. However, there were court cases that bosses/supervisors brought the ex employee to court before for joining the competition and gave sensitive info to the competition. Whether you are right or wrong, once your name on the news, your reputation etc  would be gone.

As you venture into professional career, please take note that you need to also build up your reputation, your own 'brand'. In the beginning, your degree give you a good start. But as you want to move on and move up, networking is very important. You want people to remember you how capable are you, how professional are you, how helpful are you etc....

I personally experienced other companies director came to ask me to join them and I thanked them for their offer but turned down. But it was a nice thing when you got retrenched, these people called and cared about you.

In the industry I came from, we had nasty supplier quality engineers. They wanted us to treat them like king and royals. When they were retrenched and asked for help, we courteously said we would look into it but actually with their reputation, no one dare to hire them.

for me, I once stood on my own ground and fought with a senior manager until his VP from US called and gave me a scolding. I was frightened but I knew I done nothing wrong. When times came, the VP actually remembered me could help him to execute some tasks.

Don't burn any bridges. One of my good supervisor told me and I always remembered that. When you are working in a line for too long, what comes around goes around... as the professor said, the world is flat or flatter than he thought.

I had gone through asking my boss every quarter if I still had my job for 3 years! My supervisors kept changing during the bad time. No one last more than 9 months!
